My Daughter Terra an anthology collaboratively produced by Nina Hanz, Betty Brunfaut, Bakhtawer Haider, Kristina Chan and João Villas. It brings together a wide range of international emerging artists, architects, designers and writers engaging with the language and mythologies of environmental responsibilities.

Conceptualised in moments of great emergency, the anthology collects many different vantage points and individual perspectives — regional traumas, individual pasts, the most viral of destructions and what might come in the future. These works traverse several forms including photography, personal essays, art texts, plays, poetry, etchings, renderings and much more.

The publication, which has been over a year in the making, includes a written piece I penned exclusively for the anthology, beside imagery from my photographic series ‘Residues’ (2020). More imagery from my series can be found here.

My written piece reads as follows:

“It isn’t difficult to compare the flower to the human body. Like us, the flower bleeds. Both are birthed from seed and threatened in the beginning by those little traumas: the tender bruises, cracks and tears forced upon us by the elements. But somehow as the flower breaks ground, its small body survives.

When cut from the stem, the flower begins to deteriorate. This decline cannot be stopped, only slowed by placing the now-tender stalks into nutrient-rich waters.

The human body shares this same cycle of immediate growth and eventual decline when cut away from the umbilical cord of the mother.

As the body matures, continually growing and shedding, those larger knocks and scrapes that we avoided for a time begin to cover the skin, marking it irreversibly. Degradation begins with these marks: marks which leave the flesh open to a plethora of foes. Parasites and infections find their way in and begin to wilt the stem.

Bones slip out of place and the neck becomes heavy, no longer able to support the wealth of memories housed within the skull. With our eyes now focused upon the ground from which we came, our bodies slip down to meet it.

Leaves and hairs, ovules and eggs, thorns and teeth. The bodies rejections at last are shed, landing upon the leaves which seemed to have fallen only moments before. Tissues rot and compost, leaving only a residue.”

The anthology gathers multiple voices that question why we describe Mother Earth as our caretaker when in reality we hold a huge responsibility for the planet. This shift in perspective brings forth desires to find new ways of describing, experiencing, portraying, and relating to the world we live in.

A Launch party for the publication was held at ASC Studios on the 20th of February at 7:30pm, with a tour of the printing studios of Plaintiff Press, who collaborated in making the book ethically made. At 8:00 pm, the event moved into the former courtroom at ASC Studios where contributors performed readings from the anthology, mixed with screenings of related projects.
