In 2020, I was interviewed by the editors of ICBQ Magazine about a previously unused and untitled body of photographic work. Created in 2018 by a group of graphic design students, ICBQ celebrates and explores the unseen, unfinished, unused and rejected work of graphic designers and other creatives. The conversation I had with the editors led me to re-explore the images in question - images which later formed my project ‘Residues’ (2020). More from this series is available here on my website.
This images have now been printed within the fifth issue of ICBQ Magazine titled ‘Freedom’ alongside an interview I gave about my experiences with transitioning from education to the creative industry, approaching curators and finding an audience for your work. The interview is printed upon half-page panels which are slotted in-between every double page.
Excerpt from the interview:
“ICBQ - In regards to the project you’ve submitted, how often do you work with found imagery?
SWJ - I have actually worked with found photography before, it was the first thing I did for a uni brief in first year. It’s quite funny because I wasn’t sure on it at the time but I’ve actually gone full circle back to it. I think the thing about it that I like is that you can look at the images more objectively when they’re someone else’s because you haven’t got any idea what’s outside the frame. You don’t know what’s been left in or out so you’re just looking at these precise images and trying to piece the collection together. When there’s such a set it’s more of a curation experience, it’s quite nice to select certain images and build a narrative of your own.”
You can read this interview in full within the fifth issue of ICBQ Magazine. ICBQ 05 includes work by; Happy Little Accidents, Finn Reduhn, Jun Lin, Sid White-Jones, Jonathan Quaade, Symbol Studio, Yarza Twins, Gregory Page, Tom Shepherd-Barron & Lily Hayes.
