The 30th Visa Pour L’Image festival is set to begin at the end of August, so with the annual photojournalism festival just around the corner I want to reflect on the work that I took the event in 2018, for which I was awarded a place amongst many wonderful photographers on CANON Europe’s photographic programme.
The untitled body of work was shot back in 2014 in New Delhi, India. The photographs are purposefully monochrome to contrast the vibrant photographical portrayals most commonly associated with the environment of New Delhi, however these images were not always so tightly restrained. They began as the lively snapshots of a tourist, postcard-worthy but underwhelming, as they portrayed the same India that is seen throughout broadcast media, a landscape that isn't entirely realistic.
When I came to make this project I consciously withdrew myself from my own imagery, forcing my eyes to focus on the smaller stories within the frames I had once so carefully orchestrated. The spherical frames of these new photographs mimic a magnifying glass, which I used to search within the doorways and side streets of the original prints for a new set of compositions. Creating these photographs felt like coming upon an undeveloped roll of film beneath your bed, producing memories that were not expected to be seen in such clarity ever again.
