”Look, Daddy, I Made A Magazine!"
It was wonderful to receive this customised copy of Rotten Magazine’s first volume, a punk-inspired issue which features a daring selection of photographical works from Joshua Gordon, Ciarán Óg Arnold, Dani Lessnau, Ivaylo Donchev & Gorsad.
Whilst nearly all of the magazines features successfully explores sensitive themes, including strained family bonds and the sexual representations of nude models, Rotten Magazine manages to also be comical at the same time, making for a thought-provoking easy read.
All articles within the torn, stitched and Tip-Ex heavy spreads are repurposed from various corners of the internet; such as the extremely heated (and equally amusing) comments section of Sean O’Hagan’s 2015 article ’Life on the lash’: Ciarán Óg Arnold captures small-town boozing in Ireland’. This contemporary ‘break the rules’ approach to article writing is a complete surprising but one that is welcomingly refreshing.
If your tired of the influx of high-gloss magazines on the newsstands today and are a fan of 1970’s Zine Culture design, I urge you to go and check it out.
